Burlington woman accused of stealing $1.6 million

Thursday, February 2, 2012

— A local woman faces 22 counts of obtaining property by false pretense after allegedly defrauding people of $1.6 million over three years.

Angela Dawn Campbell, 39, of North Church Street was arrested Monday at a family member’s home in Mooresville. She is being held in the Iredell County jail on a $500,000 bond.

In September, Burlington police said, they began receiving complaints from people who said they had been defrauded by a woman posing as a private investor. The woman told the alleged victims she would invest their money through online trading sites.

Police said no money was actually invested and instead, money from some victims was paid to other investors to make it appear that the investments were paying off.

The alleged scam operated from January 2008 to August 2011.

Most of the victims are from the Burlington area; several live in Florida and South Carolina. Police believe more victims might come forward.
