FAIRMONT — The cause of a Friday fire that burned a chicken house and killed 21,000 chickens hasn't been determined, authorities said Tuesday.

The fire was reported at 6:33 a.m. in one of four chicken houses on the 1500 block of Bailey Road in Fairmont, according to Lt. Brian Duckworth of the Robeson County Sheriff's Office.

The houses are owned by Stephen Dent, Duckworth said.

The building, which was 42 feet by 500 feet, was valued at about $150,000, Duckworth said, and the poultry loss was estimated to be about $4,500.

Heavy equipment is needed to lift the remains of the building in order to look for the cause, Duckworth said.

An insurance adjuster was scheduled to be on site Tuesday, Duckworth said.
