Or the better headline might be: Why Would Anyone want to run for Governor? You either view yourself as a professional politician and the Gov mansion is as a launch pad for even higher office, or you have an incredible energy, charisma and passion for transformative education and economic development (Sanford, Hunt).
Mayor Joines is certainly capable of governing, but he may not possess the eagerness and dynamic drive to get all the way to Raleigh.
This also speaks to the diminishing power of the Triad on state leadership.
Winston-Salem and Greensboro have single A baseball teams; Charlotte and Durham, AAA baseball, players who get called up to the majors.
The next Gov (figurehead) will likely emerge from a larger power base, with more national visibility, from either urban Charlotte or the Triangle, and will deal with the NC legislature dominated by a power base of 85 decidely rural counties.
