N.C. gay marriage ban opponents stump at colleges

CULLOWHEE (AP) — Opponents of a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in North Carolina are going to college.

A voter registration drive aimed at defeating the amendment when it comes up for a statewide vote in May kicks off on college campuses on Friday. Amendment opponents are in Cullowhee, home of Western Carolina University. The campaign holds multiple events in Asheville on Saturday and Sunday.

The amendment also would prevent the state from recognizing civil unions or domestic partnerships.

Advocates for changing the state constitution say the measure would protect one man and one woman unions from those who want to expand what's legal. The coalition is made up largely of conservative-leaning groups, ministers and Southern Baptists who want voters to approve the amendment. They kicked off their campaign on Monday.

Seriously, why will no one tell me the information I need to know? I am quite concerned about this. How soon after gay people are allowed to marry their partners will my wife and I need to divorce, and how soon will we need to put our daughter in the internment camp for gay indoctrination? This is important stuff, seeing how gay people are out to destroy my family. I need to know when the destruction will begin.

Have you started dating guys in anticipation of the Gaypocalypse? I bet there are on-line match-making services that will help ease the transition... ;-)

Are you serious, or are you being facetious?

Jeff, just visit one of the gay clubs in GSO on the weekend. I am sure that there will be someone there who may adequately answer those pressing concerns. It's only a matter of time before allowing same-sex couples the legal right of marriage that your family unit, as you know it, is totally destroyed!

We can only hope that the citizens of NC do the right thing and vote to support the Amendment and keep marriage between one man and one woman. Come on citizens this is a call to vote for the right thing to do.

Just one question for the on-line editors here: why is the photo that accompanies this article of marriage ban supporters -- IN WASHINGTON STATE?? I'm merely a little curious...

I didn't post either the story or the pic, Nemo, so I'm guessing that the other folks here posted this pic because (a) we don't have any N.C. file art and (b) we're test-driving a new mobile app, and we have to have art with all stories on a couple of the platforms.

Yeah, I know. It looks weird.

Lucky for you, I expect your staff photographers will have plenty of opportunities to remedy this shortfall in marriage rally images this spring. At least, I THINK it's lucky... ;-)

The Asheville students will likely greet them with pitchforks and torches in their hands, like the townspeople in Frankenstein. LOL
