BURLINGTON — An Alamance County inmate involved in a fight last week has died.
The Alamance County Sheriff's Office said today that Thomas Lumpkin Sr., 57, died Tuesday night at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. The sheriff's office did not say what caused Lumpkin's death, and it's unclear if the fight played a role.
The sheriff's office said Lumpkin was involved in a fight with another inmate Friday at the county jail. Jail guards used a Taser to break up the fight. Lumpkin suffered a small cut to the back of his head.
Lumpkin was awake and alert when he was taken to Alamance Regional Medical Center. He was later transferred to Cone.
Lumpkin was in jail on charges of attempted murder and armed robbery. The other inmate involved in the fight, George Jones, 48, was unhurt.
The sheriff's office did not say what caused the fight.
