GREENSBORO — A man is accused of raping a woman Sunday and dumping her naked body on the side of a city street, thinking that she was dead, according to court records. The woman faked her death to escape him, the records stated.
Kevin Kennedy Gilchrest, 48, of 1701 Fern Hill Road was charged Tuesday with attempted first-degree murder, second-degree rape, kidnapping and assault by strangulation. He remains in the Guilford County jail on a $1 million bond.
The woman was raped and strangled when she resisted Sunday, according to the magistrate's determination of Gilchrest's bond. The News & Record does not publish the names of sexual assault victims.
The victim received cuts and scratches on her back and legs, the court records said.
The arrest warrants said the attacker placed one hand on the woman's throat while pushing her against a wall. He placed her hand around her throat again and pushed her until she was lying on the ground.
The woman faked her death in order to survive, the court records said. The man raised her arm, which flopped down. He placed his hand under her nose to see if she was breathing; she held her breath.
Police said the attacker then placed the woman in his car and dumped her nude body on the side of Summit Avenue early Sunday, the court document said. At the time, the temperatures ranged within the 20s and 30s.
Gilchrest attempted suicide when police began their investigation, according to the court records.
Court records said Gilchrest had a prior conviction for a traffic violation and had a domestic violence protective order served on him.
The warrant didn't say where the rape occurred or describe the relationship between Gilchrest and the victim, among other details. Greensboro police spokeswoman Susan Danielsen said the department does not release details on sexual assaults.
