NEWTON GROVE -- A 9-year-old boy died during the weekend when a soccer goal tipped over and hit him on the head, according to his family.

Juan Junior Escalera, of the 300 block of Three Pines Lane in Wade, died at Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital in Dunn on Sunday following the accident.

Family members say children were playing soccer Sunday during a weekly get-together when the accident happened.

Authorities say the goal post tipped over and struck his head at a home in the 600 block of Mount Olive Drive in Newton Grove. Family members called for medics but then drove Juan to the hospital themselves, officials said.
