UNCG can’t solve Davidson puzzle

Friday, January 6, 2012
(Updated 6:57 am)

— Players kept running to the scorers table to check in for UNCG, but no matter what lineup coach Wes Miller tried, it couldn’t keep the Spartans from losing their 11th straight game.

Davidson overwhelmed the Spartans with an offensive outburst in the first half and the Wildcats cruised to a 92-63 win at the Greensboro Coliseum on Thursday night. The loss meant the Spartans (2-14) are now 0-4 in the Southern Conference, which is the same conference record they started the 2010-11 season with.

“We talked before this game about being the team with the better energy and being the more physical team,” Miller said. “And I didn’t think we were tonight. Even though we didn’t play well, it was our lack of effort and energy that bothered me the most tonight.”

Trevis Simpson led UNCG with 15 points but shot just 2 of 13 from the field. The Spartans shot 35.3 percent (18 of 51).

Nik Cochran scored 22 points and had six assists as Davidson shot a season-best 56.3 percent in the first half.

Davidson (9-4, 3-0) made 18 of 32 shots in the first half and used an 18-4 run to turn a one-point deficit into a 28-14 lead with 9:07 left. Davidson ended the half with a 19-6 run for a 48-26 cushion.

Chris Czerapowicz scored 15 points for the Wildcats and had eight rebounds.

Thanks N&R, you post an article about this game but I saw nothing about the team's respectable trip to Miami. As always, great coverage of the Spartans.

Then you didn't look very hard.

The "Spartans drop 10th straight" is the AP story on the Miami game. The link is in the "UNCG basketball" box attached to the story. It's also linked to from the "UNCG basketball 2011-12" link.

The story also was in the e-edition.

You are right, I didn't look very hard. I shouldn't have to. I don't get the hardcopy of the paper...why would anyone? When I clicked on the sports section of the online edition, it wasn't in the first few articles...so I just went elsewhere to read about the game.

But I'm pretty sure I saw an article about what Roy Williams had for breakfast and what Coach K thought about this cold snap. This is not a chapel hill or durham newspaper, but it would be hard to figure that out based on the sports section.

UNCG has been through a very tough stretch of playing better programs outside the conference such as Duke, Miami, VCU and others. This will tend to erode the confidence of a struggling team which I think you saw last night in what looked like "a lack of intensity". Miller has a tough job on his hands just keeping the team motivated. I think they could at least be competitive inside the conference if he can find a way to do this.

So ... where are all the bobbleheads that were one here commenting the firing Dement was the magic bullet to fixing the program? Is anyone ready to admit now that a coaching change is one of many changes needed to get the program back on track? Anyone? Crickets?

Wow! It is hard to believe you could be so clueless as to think that changing coaches at this point in the season will be a magic bullet for THIS year. You can't be watching if you don't think the improvement isn't substantial since the change.. Dement should have been gone at the end of last year, at the latest! Now we are left cleaning up the mess. Not saying Miller will be THE GUY, but geez, don't be a hater. He has the kids playing hard and there are a lot of bad habits to 'unteach'. We will pick up some wins and after losing 11 in a row, most people wouldn't even show up for work. Get real!

Dude, weren't you one of those same guys that said all we needed to do was fire Dement? So, that's not what you were saying? Now it's we'll be good again eventually, but not this year. I'm just chuckling at the stupidity that was that entire thought process. You fire coaches at the end of seasons. Miller has done a solid job to keep this thing from completely flying off a cliff, but make no mistake that this program was set way back by that move. Either way, I guess I'm now a hater and I'm sure Mebane Man will be along soon to call me a Dement apologist or something like that. Whatever.

Well, "Dude", cute, no I was not "one of those same guys". Dement should have been gone last year, not in the middle of this year, But, if he is gone, we might as well be supportive of the clean up crew and the players.

I have an idea, support the boys no matter if they are winning or losing. They are the ones on that court doing the work. Second idea, get rid of Record and get the guys back to playing teams around their skill level. This idea of throwing them into a tough schedule is doing nothing more than lowering their confidence. It is unfair that they should be the guinea pigs for her experiment. Allow them to build up to that level of play. While Im at it, replacing a coach mid year is crazy and nothing more than an attempt to buy herself more time. I am a former athlete for the G and I cant tell you first hand that this new strategic plan is causing nothing but problems for the tradition of excellence that we Spartans have worked so hard for. Good luck boys, keep up fight!
