GREENSBORO -- A Greensboro police officer was involved in an accident with a van while he was responding to another accident around 5:15 p.m. Friday.
The officer, who has not been identified, was driving east on West Vandalia Road with his sirens on and his lights blinking when a van traveling north on South Holden Road crossed the intersection, said eyewitness Michael Mobley of Greensboro.
The front of the van collided with the right, back door of the patrol car, Mobley said. The van spun around before stopping in the middle of the intersection. The patrol car traveled farther along Vandalia Road before stopping in front of the Kangaroo gas station.
Michael Mobley and his wife, Dara Mobley, said they were stopped at a red light in a lane on West Vandalia Road. They saw and heard the officer pause at the intersection and honk his horn repeatedly. It seems that the female driver did not see the patrol car, the couple said.
The unidentified woman in the green and gray Chevrolet Astro van was taken by ambulance to the hospital. She was complaining of chest pains.
The officer left his vehicle on his own accord.
The police officer had been traveling to an accident near the intersection of Pinecroft and South Holden roads.
The crash reconstruction team was called to both locations.
Details are developing.
