GREENSBORO -- The Greensboro Grasshoppers will have a whole new coaching staff this summer, led by manager Dave Berg.
Berg, a former infielder who played seven years in the major leagues, spent the last two seasons managing the Miami Marlins' short-season Class-A affiliate, the Jamestown Jammers of the New York-Penn League -- one step below Greensboro on the minor-league ladder.
The Jammers finished 35-40 last summer. That team's pitching coach, Blake McGinley, and trainer, Patrick Amorelli, will join Berg in Greensboro this year. Frank Moore will serve as the Hoppers hitting coach.
Moore said Andy Haines, who managed the Hoppers to a South Atlantic League championship, was promoted within the Marlins organization and will manage the advanced Class-A Jupiter Hammerheads. Hitting coach Kevin "Smoke" Randel was also promoted, and he will be the hitting instructor for the Class-AA Jacksonville Suns. Pitching coach Willie Glen left the Marlins and took a job in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system.
Berg played college baseball at Miami, and the Marlins drafted him in the 38th round in 1993. When he made his debut for the Marlins on April 2, 1998, he became the lowest-ever draft pick by Florida to reach the major leagues. He hit a career-best .313 for the Marlins in 1998.
Following the 2001 season, Berg signed with Toronto where he played for three seasons. Berg retired following the 2006 season with a career .269 batting average in 582 major-league games.
