Head of N.C. unemployment office testifies before committee
RALEIGH (AP) — The head of North Carolina's unemployment benefits office found herself in an unusual spot before a General Assembly committee: subpoenaed by legislators to talk about money owed to the federal government and about how jobless data is shared with the governor.
Assistant Commerce Secretary Lynn Holmes was questioned by panel members Wednesday after she took an oath while testifying. The subpoena was issued after she failed to attend a Revenue Laws Study Committee meeting last month. Holmes said her absence was the result of a miscommunication.
The questions included why the state owes $2.6 billion to the federal government to pay for jobless benefits during the recession and its aftermath.
Republican lawmakers also asked Holmes about protocol for giving embargoed unemployment data to Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue's office before it's released.
