RALEIGH (AP) — The North Carolina House appears to have given up for now on trying to override Gov. Beverly Perdue's veto of a bill that would gut key sections of the Racial Justice Act.
House Republicans said Wednesday evening they had moved the bill that would essentially repeal the 2009 law to a judiciary committee. They also announced the formation of a committee that would look at racial discrimination and how the death penalty is carried out.
House Majority Leader Paul Stam said some Democrats have some ideas on ways to fix the 2009 law and wants to hear about them.
The Senate voted to override the veto earlier Wednesday, but Republicans needed help from Democrats to do the same thing in the House.
Lawmakers still hadn't adjourned as of Wednesday night.
