GIBSONVILLE — A man wanted by Gibsonville police for allegedly stabbing his brother on Christmas night surrendered to authorities Thursday.
Jose Gonsalo Flores, 27, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He was placed in the Guilford County jail under $500,000 bond. In addition, Flores, who is a native of El Salvador, was placed under a detainer by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for allegedly violating federal laws. He is under no bond for those charges, according to a Gibsonville Police Department news release.
Flores, who was originally identified by police as Jose Flores-Lopez, surrendered to Gibsonville police at 11 a.m. His brother Jose Lopez, 33, was stabbed in the chest and was expected to be released from Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro on Thursday.
Flores, also known as "Chalo" or "Animal," had been on the run since Sunday night after the stabbing took place at his brother's house on Cedar Street in Gibsonville between 8 and 9 p.m. Lopez was allegedly trying to prevent Flores from assaulting a woman, who police say is either Flores' wife or girlfriend. Authorities are not exactly sure if they are legally married.
During the altercation, Flores allegedly stabbed Lopez in the chest. Lopez was taken to Moses Cone Hospital and was in critical condition. Gibsonville police Chief Mike Woznick said Thursday that Lopez's medical condition improved dramatically.
Flores left the house with the woman and a child. Police located the woman in Gibsonville at about 5 p.m. Wednesday. She was not harmed and Flores was not with her. Late Wednesday Gibsonville police heard that Flores might turn himself in on Thursday.
"Somebody familiar with him called at about 10 p.m. and said he would turn himself in this morning," Woznick said Thursday afternoon.
Gibsonville police contacted ICE for assistance and have been working with the fugitive operation's division since Sunday. In addition, Burlington and Elon police as well as the Alamance County Sheriff's Department have helped in the investigation, Woznick said.
Gibsonville police have encountered Flores on Christmas Day in the past. Woznick said that Flores was charged on Christmas 2008 for assaulting someone with firearm. Throughout the search this week, authorities considered Flores armed and dangerous.
