Unique Christmas ornaments

For many people, Christmas ornaments are more than just decorations for the tree.

They connect us to past holidays.

And the memories and stories are shared every year with our loved ones, as the tree is decorated.

There’s that special ornament you’ve had since you were a child, or one that hung on your grandmother’s tree.

There are the ornaments you bought or received the first time you put up your very own Christmas tree.

And if you’re a parent, there are those imperfect, but sweet handmade ornaments your kids made at school. Maybe the paper is worn or faded, but they still go on the tree.

Ornaments also make great gifts. And there are ones to reflect nearly any interest or milestone. So if you’re looking for a small but meaningful gift or stocking stuffer, consider some of these ornaments made and sold here by Greensboro artists:

Cardinal figurine

Artist: Classic Tassels & More, of Jamestown

Cost: $38

Where: 317-3325 or donna@classychicaccents.com

This resin-based cardinal figurine perches on a nest of white and cream crinkle, and is embellished with assorted ribbon loop and twisted sparkle chenille.

The tassels are handcrafted by Donna Richardson and her company.

Peacock on glass

Artist: Margot May

Cost: $20

Where: Jules Antiques & Fine Art, 530 South Elm St., Greensboro. More ornaments will be on exhibit and for sale at Leon’s Style Salon, 409 Tate St., through Saturday Prices will be $20-$28.

May is among about a dozen people in the U.S., specializing in this style of glass art. She carved this peacock into the glass with a dentist drill, and used grits of diamond and stone to add details.

Christmas tree

Artist: Becky Kates

Cost: $6 to $10

Where: Grove Street Holiday Bazaar, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 10 at Glenwood Coffee & Books, 1310 Glenwood Ave., Greensboro

Becky Kates makes tree and heartornaments from various scraps of fabric, buttons and ribbons.

Santa Claus

Artists: individuals at Lifespan campus

Cost: $5

Where: The Lifespan gift shop at 908 McClellan Place, Greensboro; 852-1495

These clay ornaments are made by individuals with developmental disabilities. More ornaments, clay snowmen and birdhouses are also sold at the store.

Glass ball and fabric bird

Artist: Laura Piedad

Cost: Birds, $2; Acrylic balls, $3.

Where: llpiedad@yahoo.com or 272-2196.

Piedad sells her ornaments at First Moravian Church’s annual Candle Tea event. The women there make ornaments yearlong for it. She enjoys the fellowship with other women who also enjoy crafting. Her glass ball is filled with scraps of holiday wrapping paper, and is easy to make, she says. Her decorative bird, made of vintage fabric, can be hung throughout the year from a window or doorway.

Ornament econsystem

Artist: Kim Mchone of Contents Home

Cost: $19.99

Where: Design Archives, 342-344 South Elm St., Greensboro; 272-1800

Add more greenery to your greenery. The cool thing about this little ecosystem is that once Christmas is over, you can hang it elsewhere in your home and enjoy it all year. Or as long as you can keep it alive.
