HILLSBOROUGH (AP) — Opening statements will wait one more day in the trial of the Durham man accused of killing UNC student body president Eve Carson.
Jury selection continued Tuesday afternoon in the case of Laurence Lovette Jr. Lawyers for both sides are expected to deliver opening statements Wednesday.
Lovette is charged with first-degree murder in the 2008 death of Carson, a native of Athens, Ga.
Authorities say Lovette and Demario Atwater kidnapped the 22-year-old student and took her to several ATMs, eventually withdrawing $1,400. Her body was found about a mile from the Chapel Hill campus, riddled with handgun and 12-gauge shotgun wounds.
The 20-year-old Lovette will not face the death penalty because he was a minor at the time of the shooting.
