Perdue says hundreds of state rules have been scaled back
RALEIGH (AP) — Gov. Beverly Perdue's administration says hundreds of state government administrative rules have been repealed and fewer have been issued in the year since she began an effort to clean up regulations deemed unnecessary or lacking common sense.
A state budget official provided a legislative committee Friday with data following an executive order Perdue signed in October 2010 that she said would lessen the weight of bureaucracy on people and businesses.
Committee co-chairman Sen. David Rouzer of Johnston County says Perdue's actions were a good first step but says a new law passed in March also contributed to the decline in new rules.
The Legislature also passed a more comprehensive rule-making bill that became law in July despite Perdue's veto. Environmental activists are worried that law will roll back health protections.
