Leader of Va. fake ID ring pleads guilty

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The leader of a violent fake-identification ring that operated in 11 states has pleaded guilty in federal court in Virginia.

Israel Cruz Millan of Raleigh pleaded guilty to racketeering and two other charges an hour before his trial was scheduled to begin today The trial of his co-defendant, Edy Oliverez-Jiminez, is still on.

According to prosecutors, Millan led a fake ID ring that had roots in Mexico and protected its lucrative turf with beatings and at least one slaying. Oliverez-Jiminez, an alleged former cell leader in Arkansas, is accused of kidnapping and murdering a rival fake ID seller in Little Rock before relocating to Virginia. Jury selection is under way in his trial.

Thirty people originally were charged in the case. Most have pleaded guilty.
