GREENSBORO — On an already soggy night, Southern Guilford coach Darryl Brown managed to get even more wet.
His Storm (8-2, 4-1 Mid-Piedmont 3-A) beat Asheboro (7-4, 3-2) at home 20-6 on Friday night to clinch a first-round home playoff game and a share of the conference title with Northeast Guilford (9-1, 4-1).
“I’m just extremely proud of these guys,” Brown said, wearing a soaked shirt and pants after his players emptied a cooler over his head following the win. “It feels like midseason, it’s just gone by so quick.”
The Storm’s offensive leader Friday was junior Malik Moseley, who ran for 168 yards on 20 carries. Quarterback Jamie Cunningham passed for 146 yards on 10 of 19 attempts and was intercepted once.
“We’ve got a big-arm quarterback,” said Brown, who called for Cunningham to throw to Quashan Butler on several big plays, including the first touchdown of the game.
“That was the best defense we’ve played all year,” Brown said of Asheboro, who led the conference in defense going into the night. The Blue Comets had surrendered only 120 points before facing Southern Guilford. Yet Southern scored enough points in the soaked evening to win.
“Again, I’m just extremely proud of these guys,” Brown said.
And then, as if he weren’t wet enough, Brown joined in the celebration with his players. Walking off C.K. Siler Field, he did a belly slide through the end zone.
