Greenway extension plan will be on display

Thursday, October 20, 2011

Guilford County residents can get a glimpse today  of what’s being planned for the next leg of the Atlantic & Yadkin Greenway,  then give their reactions to local officials.

Draft maps of the new hiking, biking and horse-riding trail across northwestern Guilford will be displayed from 4 to 7 p.m.  in the Summerfield Athletic Park fieldhouse, 5200 U.S. 220 North.

The proposed extension of more than seven  miles is a joint project by the towns of Summerfield and Stokesdale, Guilford County, the Greensboro Metropolitan Planning Organization, state government and a number of nonprofit groups.

Following the route of the former Atlantic & Yadkin Railroad,  the new section ultimately will carry the statewide Mountains to Sea Trail into Guilford  from northern Forsyth County.  The new trail will begin in many places as an unpaved surface of crushed stone. But eventually, it will feature long stretches of asphalt and concrete pavement, planners say.

Initial plans call for a lengthy section suitable for horseback riding. The project is at the stage where planners gather information and opinions before preparing a final design.

Today’s meeting will be drop-in style, with planners on hand to discuss the project and answer questions. A second review session is planned for Oct. 27 at Stokesdale Town Hall.
