GREENSBORO — She’s Andrea Dyer. And she’s a yogaholic.
But through yoga, she finds power, strength and healing.
Dyer, who practices almost daily, wants others to discover the benefits of yoga. Her passion has not only kept her in business, but her Greensboro studio, Mind/Body/Fitness Yoga, earned her the winner of Go Triad’s Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Yoga Studio.
On Battleground Avenue, across from Earth Fare, the tranquil studio offers 24 classes weekly. Her cast of eight instructors lead classes ranging from gentle flow for beginners to the more advanced and demanding Ashtanga practice.
Dyer opened the studio three years ago after she was laid off from American Express. She learned that others going through similar circumstances needed yoga most. So she offers stimulus yoga, a free, weekly yoga class for the unemployed or those recently laid-off. It remains popular and is even a networking outlet for some.
Dyer, 50, discovered yoga in college. She has taught in traditional gyms, offices, yoga studios, local parks and even her backyard.
An unexpected discovery since opening her studio is that she has created a gathering place that attracts those who are laid-off, small business owners, stay-at-home moms, students and working professionals on their lunch breaks. They go there to stretch, breathe and center themselves. And, she says, they’ve become friends.
