Shooting of penned Asheboro deer draws outrage

RALEIGH (AP) — More than 5,000 people from the United States and at least 25 other countries have signed an online petition protesting the killing of nine penned deer by North Carolina officials who said they had to shoot the deer to test them for disease.

The petition on the change.org website protests the killing of the deer on the farm of Wayne and Linda Kindley near Asheboro. Wayne Kindley says two were white-tailed deer he had rehabilitated — one with one eye and a fawn. The others were fallow deer.

The animals were shot Sept. 20.

The state Wildlife Resources Commission says the deer had to be tested for chronic wasting disease, which can't be done on live animals. It says the animals were held in an unlicensed facility.

I guess those idiots never heard of euthanasia?

Or maybe they were just cheap; bullets don't cost as much as drugs. And after all, it's not like it was anyone they cared about.

This is unbelievably ridiculous! It has already been explained that the deer had to be killed in order to do the tests. That should be 'End of Story.'
When folks hunt deer, they don't capture them and put them to sleep. They shoot them with some sort of firearm or arrow. This situation is no different.
There are too many deer, so they need to be thinned out. What about all the damage to vehicles and injury and death to persons caused by deer?
We've gotten to a place where some people care more about animals than human beings.

READ the article!

These deer weren't being hunted for sport, and they weren't free in the wild. They were in a PEN, being tended to by a human being. They were more like pets (they certainly weren't livestock).

Those deer could have been easily and safely euthanized, instead of simply shooting them. I'm not questioning the necessity of the testing, only the methods used.

If they had been horses, they would have been euthanized.

There's no excuse for what those knuckleheads did.

Just a thought, obey the law. Leave Bamby alone and let mother nature take care of it.

How about the people that were caring for the deer? What kind of police state do we live in where this can happen? I thank God it wasn't me. The shooters can also thank God it wasn't me. I hope the human victims sue the state for a mountain of money and the shooters get jail time.

Its amazing how simple some solutions appear when you are not actually there or have all the knowledge that being on scene would offer. Its also amazing how simple it is to glibly pontificate on what someone else should or should or should not have done from the comfort of an armchair Monday morning. The simple fact of the matter is that the State Wildlife Officers (who were on scene and had all the facts and knowlede that being on scene provided) did what they had to do, in the manner that they deemed most appropriate to take care of a problem created by someone else illegally keeping the deer. It should also be noted that a well placed shot will kill a Deer almost instantly. The bottom line is have all the facts and know at least a little something about what you are talking about before you go off the deep end second guessing the professionals who were there and had all the facts.

If you think we have problems with the NC Wildlife Department, read this link about what is happening in Texas. Talk about outrage. This petition had over 80,000 signatures as of last night. Change.org.
