Rockingham: Great views, great activities

Located in the northernmost region of the Triad, Rockingham County is home to some of the area’s most awe-inspiring natural beauty and storied history. Here are some of the many attractions and activities available to visitors.

Chinqua Penn Plantation

  • What: Built in the 1920s by socialites Betsy and Jeff Penn, the Chinqua Penn mansion sits on acres of rolling farmland and is home to the Penns’ eclectic collection of art and furnishings.
  • Where: 2138 Wentworth St., Reidsville
  • What you can do: Visitors can take guided tours of the mansion and walk the grounds. There is a hiking trail on the former grounds as well.
  • When it is open: Hours vary by season.
  • Cost: Guided tours are $20 for adults; $15 for seniors, students and military; and $10 for ages 6-16. Children 5 and younger are free.

Lake Reidsville

  • What: A 750-acre lake and park with outdoor activities, including water skiing and picnicking. Lake Reidsville hosts events throughout the season.
  • Where: 630 Waterworks Road, Reidsville
  • What you can do: Camping, boating, fishing, disc golf, duck hunting and more.
  • When it is open: Hours vary by season. Check the website for more details.
  • Cost: Varies by activity.

River Fun

  • What: Rockingham County is home to the Dan, Mayo and Smith rivers and part of the Haw River.
  • Where: Several river access points can be found around the county. Check the county tourism website for locations or contact local outfitters.
  • What you can do: Canoe, kayak, fish, swim or float. Don’t miss the history
  • surrounding the rivers,
  • including stone fish traps that were built by Native Americans hundreds of years ago, and industrial history, including century-old mills.
  • When it is open: Access points are open all year.
  • Cost: Public access points are free.

Eden Drive-In

  • What: One of the last drive-in movie theaters in operation
  • Where: 106 Fireman Club Road, Eden
  • What you can do: Watch first-run movies in your car.
  • When it is open: Gate opens at 7 p.m. Movies start at dark.
  • Cost: $5 for adults, $2 for children 6 and younger.
