Stokesdale -- The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office says counterfeit money was used twice this week to buy items posted on Craigslist from locals.

On Tuesday Keith Thomas of Stokesdale reported selling tattoo equipment to a man and woman who responded to his Craigslist ad. The couple met Thomas at his home and paid with two $100 bills. The bills were later determined to be counterfeit.

On Wednesday Leslie Aheron reported receiving three $100 bills from a couple who came to her Stokesdale home to buy an Xbox 360 she advertised on Craigslist. Those bills were later determined to be counterfeit by a bank.

Dean Venable, a spokesman with the sheriff’s office, said it is possible both incidents involved the same couple.

“If you’re attempting to sell anything use caution,” Venable said. “If you need a deputy to look at it we’d be glad to do so,” he added about the bills.

The man in both incidents was described as white, between 20 and 25 years old, skinny, short brown hair. His name may be Timothy. One victim said he had a tattoo of Jesus on his left forearm and a bible with a small cross inside it on his right forearm

The woman on Tuesday was described as white, a redhead with acne all over her face.

The woman on Wednesday was described as white, in her early 20s, skinny and pregnant with blonde, shoulder length hair. Her name may be Becky.

In both incidents the couple drove a camouflage colored Toyota pickup truck

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 634-3232 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 349-9683.
