EDEN -- The fight over a proposed landfill outside of Eden may have cooled publicly but opponents are still preparing for a battle. Local environmental group Dan River Basin Association began a fundraising campaign this week that will pay for an attorney to oppose the proposed 350-acre landfill and recycling center.
“The opposing side has multiple attorneys and we feel like our side needs to handle things in a professional manner and we feel like we need to seek help to do that,” said DRBA Vice President Fletcher Waynick.
Waynick declined to say whether the group has hired an attorney, nor would he say if any other organizations are helping fund the effort.
Waynick said those interested in donating can learn how at the group's website, www.danriver.org.
The issue is currently in limbo. Earlier this month planning department officials pulled the developers’ permit request because it did not adequately address how they intend to mitigate wildlife drawn to the landfill that pose a potential hazard to the nearby Shiloh Airport.
County Attorney Eugene Russell said Thursday the county has received no additional information from the developers addressing those concerns.
