Summerfield's Preston Dembowiak and UNCG golfer Colin Chapman grabbed two of the three berths available for the U.S. Amateur golf championship during qualifying that ended today at Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons.
The U.S. Amateur will be at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis., Aug. 22-28. Stroke play is scheduled for the first two days, then the field will be cut to the low 64 scorers for match play beginning Aug. 24. The final on Aug. 28 is a 36-hole match.
Dembowiak shots rounds of 71 and 68 for a 3-under-par 139 to tie with Chapman (65-74) and with South Carolinian Caleb Sturgeon for the second and third berths. Dembowiak and Chapman parred the second playoff hole to clinch the berths, and Sturgeon will be the first alternate.
Cary's Michael Cromie won the qualifier by four shots.
Dembowiak played golf at Liberty University before graduating in May. He helped the Flames crack the top 30 and go to the NCAA regionals this spring. He reached the quarterfinals of the North & South Amateur at Pinehurst this summer.
Chapman is a rising senior at UNCG.
Elon's John Somers finished sixth in the U.S. Amateur qualifier, Pfafftown's Jeremy Ray tied for seventh, and Winston-Salem's Colin Kent tied for 10th.
