Harris Teeter to close Golden Gate store

Thursday, July 7, 2011
(Updated 4:11 pm)

— Harris Teeter will close its store in Golden Gate Shopping Center on July 26, a store spokeswoman confirmed today.

Store employees were told Wednesday that the company's decided not to renew its lease at the shopping plaza, Harris Teeter spokeswoman Catherine Reuhl said. The employees will be offered jobs at other stores.

The decision to close the store was made after a "strategic market review," Reuhl said.

"Harris Teeter's current store on Golden Gate Drive was built over 20 years ago and is a very small store that limits the variety and selection the company offers at its other locations," she wrote in an email.

"The company is not able to expand the footprint of this store and is closing its Golden Gate location to focus additional resources on other Harris Teeter stores in the area."

It is strange that Harris Teeter maintains a compact grocery store in Uptown Charlotte and closes the community store at Golden Gate that is the nearest to Greensboro's center city. Please don't use the excuse small store to close this store. Many patrons use the Golden Gate due to this sized shopping is not overwhelming like some other mega-stores that look like cornfield mazes with duplicated lost signs.

Thank you retired English teacher. Your suggestion to join a facebook group for rehab info was not clicked. Harris Teeter is the subject and not writing skills.

Dogwood, I'm sorry you've been burned too many times by people who want to correct your grammar. The Facebook group is for people who prefer small Harris Teeter stores to large ones. Your writing skills are actually quite good.

Harris Teeter cashier: Did you find everything?
me: Yes, I found everything to be at least 20% higher then Food Lion.

I can't stand that, "Did you find everything?".

That's sad to hear, because it is a wonderful little store. I haven't gone much in the last few years (even though it's one of the closest to my house) since I am normally in other areas of the city. However, I can definitely understand the idea behind closing it, and I'm glad they are relocating employees.

I actually like it when they ask if I've found everything....helps me remember if I need to get rainchecks or not. :)

while in theory it is true the employees were offered positions at other stores..its not the whole truth..all full time employees some with the company as many as 18 years were told they were being dropped down to part time and could only get 27 hours a week, and lose their medical coverage and their vacation time and they were free to go to food lion of they didn't like it. Way to do business Harris teeter..treat loyal employees like used garbage.

What a load of crap, and I agree with the other comments too! I didn't care for the store at that location, bcause the employees were never that friendly; only one cashier that was.. HT thinks they are hot ----, and if u notice, they only put stores in the snobby parts of town, so I'm assuming this is for all the "high class" customers that can AFFORD the high prices they have, that the average consumer cannot! Wonder what will happen with the MEGA store at Friendly, when the new Whole Foods opens??? They really need to think about getting their stores back to normal size, so people (like my Husband) would want to spend $$ there, and not be intimidated by how huge they are, and how long it will take them to find what they need!

love your comment. I was always very nice to my customers but then I got transferred to a bigger store and things went down hill from there. I prefer to shop at Wal-Mart. At least the food is fresh and about 50 cents cheaper or more on items. Walmart takes away alot of business from FL and HT. I think the new whole foods market is going to be on New Garden Road where the new Fresh Market is - but there is a HT right across the street. Let's see who comes out ahead??

The new Whole Foods will take over half of the existing Sears building in Friendly shopping center.

I think it is sad that HT is closing that store; alot of older residents enjoy that location. Having worked at that store the people who come in are friendly and they know we will talk to them. I would hope they would re-open the Yanceyville/Church Street location. Some of the bigger stores are very hard for older people to walk in and around; which is why I do most of my 91 year old mom's grocery shopping. HT needs to look at the needs of the people not the need to just make MONEY!

buy one get one and double and triple coupons for on sale items are best bet as regular prices are too high.meat and seafood at some stores are not good cuts

Bye bye, Harris Teeter, and a Hello to Trader Joe's? Would be a great location for a wonderful new food store.

I have shopped at this Harris Teeter almost exclusively for 5 years. I have always found the staff to be welcoming and friendly. I don't mind the smaller selection because that makes it easier to find what I'm looking for. It's also less intimidating. My family and I often walk to the HT for small trips because it's so convenient. I don't intend to take my business to the Food Lion on Golden Gate but I don't want to drive to the other HT's either. This is a sad statement, Harris Teeter. It seems you don't care about community and loyal customers.
