GREENSBORO — Motorists, the long wait is just about over.
After more than a decade of planning and permit seeking, the final phase of the New Garden Road widening is almost finished.
"It is pretty much complete," said Greg Ingle, who works in the city's engineering and inspections department. "We've got a little work to do on one of the side streets. A slight change in one of the islands. But other than that, it's just a matter of finishing the clean-up work."
Motorists can expect some sporadic lane closures. But all four lanes should remain open for the most part.
The section of New Garden Road between Jefferson Road and Timber Oak Drive was the only remaining stretch of two-lane road on the heavily traveled route linking the Guilford College area to Bryan Boulevard and Battleground Avenue.
The City Council approved the project in the 1990s. But it took an unusually longer period of time to get the required approvals from state and federal agencies because of extensive stream restoration that was required north of Jefferson Road.
