GREENSBORO — It appears likely that the YMCA short course nationals will come to Greensboro in 2012, though officials with the meet would not confirm.
Jim Weaton, the national director of events for the YMCA, said today that Greensboro was one of six cities considered and that he will attend a press conference at the Greensboro Coliseum on Thursday.
A release from the coliseum said that there would be a "major national event" announced but gave little detail otherwise.
"I'm not at liberty to speak too much about it, but a press conference has been called," Weaton said. He would not confirm whether the short course nationals would be discussed.
The YMCA announced earlier that the event will move from its longtime home at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 2012 after the city's elected officials chose not to replace the grandstand with temporary seats until the complex has a renovation.
In a release, the YMCA said that it wanted a facility with at least 1,500 seats (.pdf) for the 2012 site. Roughly 1,700 swimmers (.pdf) and others attended the meet in 2011 at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex in April.
