LIFE

Greensboro actor in 'Earnest’

— Broadway fans don’t have to travel to New York to see the Tony Award-nominated comedy “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

Hanesbrands Theatre is joining dozens of other performing arts centers and movie theaters that will air the production starting today.

“The Importance of Being Earnest: Live in HD” will air at 7:30 p.m. today and Monday. The production was filmed live in high definition from Roundabout Theatre Company’s American Airlines Theatre in New York.

There’s an added treat for local audiences: Greensboro native David Furr plays man-about-town John Worthing in Oscar Wilde’s comedy of mistaken identity.

As Worthing and Algernon Montcrieff pursue Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew, matters are complicated by the imaginary characters the men invent to cover their other activities — and by the disapproval of Gwendolen’s mother, Lady Bracknell.

The play has been nominated for three Tony Awards: Brian Bedford as best actor for his role as Lady Bracknell, best revival of a play and best costumes.

Furr has other stage and screen roles to his credit.

• In 2005, he played opposite Kathleen Turner and Bill Irwin in Broadway’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”

• In 2007, he appeared in the movie “Evening,” starring Meryl Streep and Glenn Close.

• In 2009, he acted on Broadway with David Hyde Pierce in “Accent on Youth.”

Furr also has appeared at leading regional theaters and on TV shows, including “Law & Order: SVU” and “CSI: Miami.”
