Savvy Shopper: Antiques stores to close this summer

— The economy isn’t recovering fast enough for two Greensboro stores closing because business has been slow.

Luxury Junk (4616-B W. Market St.; 254-2820), which sells items such as antiques, home and garden accessories, imported furniture and jewelry, is closing in July.

The store, which is in the Price Place Shopping Center, is having a going-out-of-business sale starting Monday.

All items will be 50 percent to 75 percent until June 30.

June 30 will also be the last day Junk in the Trunk Antique and Thrift (4207 Summit Ave.; 375-7045) will be in business.

The store is also having a clearance sale, which has already started.

Although customer feedback has been positive through the years, the owners of Luxury Junk were disappointed by lower than expected sales.

“My customers are really happy because of the quality,” said Young An, 41, who opened the store with her husband, James Park, in September 2009. “A lot of quality you don’t see anymore.”

An pointed to items for sale, including candle holders made in Italy, a vase made in South Korea and jewelry made in Thailand and Mexico.

So what’s next?

“Vacation,” Park said, laughing.

It has been five years since they’ve taken one.

At Junk in the Trunk Antique and Thrift, store owner Lori Bare cited two reasons for closing after five years in business: a slow economy and increased competition in the thrift store business in the Greensboro area.

The store sells antiques, household items, clothes and baby items.

It also features small furniture, such as coffee tables, end tables, mirrors, lamps, chairs and desks.

Free market

Here’s something to do today that won’t cost you anything.

The Interactive Resource Center (407 E. Washington St., Greensboro; 332-0824), which helps the homeless, is hosting its first free market from 2 to 4 p.m. at its new location.

Think of it as a big yard sale, but free.

Starting at 1 p.m., you can also donate some of your stuff for the event, including clothes, furniture, household goods, toys, books, board games, CDs, DVDs, garden supplies, plants, produce and canned goods.

Coupon policies

Confused by store coupon policies? You’re not alone.

It can get pretty frustrating for some shoppers.

It’s tough to keep up with all the changes, too.

Here’s something that might help. I’ve compiled a list of stores that spell out their coupon policies on their websites at news-record.com/bargainsense.

Stores with locations in the Triad that do this include Food Lion, Dollar General, Target, Walmart, Harris Teeter, Walgreens and Rite Aid.

If your favorite store isn’t on the list, chances are the company doesn’t make its coupon policy available online.

Ivy & Leo opens

Ivy & Leo, a women’s fashion apparel, footwear and accessories store, recently opened at The Shops at Friendly Center.

The store is between Cache and Talbots off West Friendly Avenue.

The number is 676-5282.

Specials at Bakers

Bakers fashion store at Four Seasons Town Centre is having a couple of specials that expire soon.

Buy one piece of jewelry and get one half off

at the store until Wednesday.

You can also take advantage of a coupon good for $10 off shoes and 20 percent off handbags or accessories.

Visit this link to get the coupon, which expires Tuesday.

Free movie ticket

If you are a regular shopper at Alamance Crossing, you can get a free movie ticket.

Pick up a key tag at the Carousel Cinemas box office in the shopping center and have it punched each time you spend $20 at a store.

After 10 punches, you get a free ticket.
