U.S. pairs skating champs splitting up

U.S. pairs skating champions Caitlin Yankowskas and John Coughlin are splitting up a week after finishing sixth at the world championships, the Associated press reports.

The two won their national championship inside the Greensboro Coliseum in January during the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Yankowskas and Coughlin gave no reason for the end of their four-year partnership, announced Wednesday by U.S. Figure Skating. But Yankowskas says she plans to look for a new partner while Coughlin says he wants to stay involved in skating.

The announcement comes as a surprise. Yankowskas and Coughlin had won their first U.S. title in January and followed with a sixth-place finish at worlds, the best by an American pair in a non-Olympic year since 1997.
