Towns may renew talks on annexation line

— The town of Elon wants to renew discussions with the Board of Aldermen to try to agree on an annexation line between the towns.

The board talked about the request at its agenda meeting Monday. Some aldermen said they want to know why Elon is making the request.

For years, Elon and Gibsonville have been trying to come to an agreement on the areas each of them would be able to annex.

In a letter to the town, Elon Mayor Jerry Tolley said the area that would be affected are properties surrounding Elon Ossipee and Gibsonville Ossipee roads.

Gibsonville Mayor Lenny Williams said he would talk to Tolley and may have Aldermen Ken Pleasants and Veronica Revels meet with Elon.

“We do need a line, but on the other hand we shouldn’t be giving things away,” Williams said.

Several aldermen said they had received complaints about a carport recently erected between the Trimmed in Red Salon and the U.S. Post Office building on East Main Street. Tabasco Lodge 271, a freemason organization, is using it for barbecue sales. Some people think the structure is unsightly.

“It’s on the verge of a Hatfield-McCoy feud around town,” Pleasants said. “I think both sides will admit it really doesn’t look that good.”

Town Manager Ben Baxley said the structure doesn’t require a permit and is on private property. The board could consider amending ordinances in the business district, he said.

Alderman Neil Bromilow said a town can’t legislate good taste.

“When we start getting into that, … it’s going to get tricky,” he said.

The town needs to be careful not to take appearance ordinances as far as the town of Cary, he said.

“Let’s stop at common sense and go no further,” Bromilow said.

The aldermen will ask the planning board to begin looking into updating the land-use plan and appearance standards for the business district.

Also at the meeting, Vernon Brady, owner of the property at 7075 Kivette House Road, asked the town for permission to replace an old, private water line that is faulty. The board approved the project.
