JAMESTOWN — Jamestown residents have new rules to follow when it comes to shooting firearms.
The town council passed an ordinance Tuesday night making it illegal to discharge explosive weapons including guns, rifles and pistols. However, residents can use these weapons in defense of life or property. Also, eradication of pests is allowed but only with limited range arms, and slugs and buckshot are prohibited.
The weapons also are allowed on approved public or private shooting ranges, for people lawfully engaged in pest control and by law enforcement officers.
The board also tabled discussion of an annexation agreement and land transfer with Greensboro.
Dick Franks of Koury Corp. opposed the proposed agreement because it splits the business’ property so that it falls into both jurisdictions. This would be an obstacle to attracting developers, he said.
Linda Cooper, who lives on Chadwick Drive, spoke in favor of the proposal.
Planning Director Matthew Johnson said there are not many scenarios possible because Greensboro already has annexed most of the land up to the annexation line. Greensboro has expressed disagreement with several other options, he said.
Council members said the town is trying to make the agreement and swap as equitable as possible. The agreement would extend to 2041 . Greensboro voted to approve the changes.
Public hearings will continue when the town restarts the discussion.
Also at the meeting, the council:
• Awarded a contract of $37,000 to Tencarva Machinery Company for upgrades to the Mendenhall Pump Station.
• Increased fees for field and shelter rental at the Gibson Park. Field fees increase July 1, and shelter fees increase immediately.
• Appointed Jane Payne to the Guilford County Historic Preservation Commission.
• Voted to reapply to participate in the North Carolina Main Street program, through which the N.C. Department of Commerce helps towns preserve their history and improve business districts.
• Announced the annual Spring Litter Sweep will be at 9 a.m. April 30 at the Food Lion. The Key Club of Ragsdale High School will participate, and the community is invited.
