A badly injured horse found in Guilford County was euthanized Tuesday.
The N.C. Triangle Region chapter of the U.S. Equine Rescue League said the mud-covered 2-year-old horse was found Monday and transported to N.C. State's Large Animal Hospital in Raleigh for treatment.
The horse had severe infections in two of his legs, an abrasion on the cornea of one eye and multiple other wounds that were filled with maggots.
The rescue league said it opted to put the horse to death to end its suffering rather than pursue an uncertain and expensive course of treatment.
The rescue league did not say how long the horse had been abandoned. It has set up a fund to cover the costs of treatment and to help other neglected horses.
