Crews battle brush fires

Firefighters on Old Julian Road put out hot spots from a fire that started when high winds knocked down a power line earlier today.

About noon, the Mount Hope Church Fire Department responded to two calls about brush fires caused by downed power lines.

"After Station 38 arrived at the scene on 3612 Old Julian Road, I called for assistance from Alamance Fire Dept. Station 54," fire Chief Larry Moser said.

There was also a fire on Mount Hope Church Road because of a power line downed by a tree. Sherry Hipple, who lives at 3612 Old Julian Road, reported the fire.

"My electricity went out, and I heard a roar and a rumble," she said. When she went outside to check it out, "I saw a whole line on fire."

Hipple pointed to about 200 yards of charred power line across the street from her home.

Ah, so that explains it. I live a couple miles away and the power just came back on about 15 minutes ago.
