Andrews uses muscle, memory for title win

HIGH POINT -- The memory of last year's overtime loss in the playoffs has been a valuable learning tool for the Andrews Red Raiders.

For the second straight game, the Red Raiders pulled out a last-second win, as Mark Johnson hit a layup with two seconds remaining to deliver a 68-66 victory over the Cummings Cavaliers in Friday's Class 2-A East Sectional final, which sends Andrews to the regionals.

Cummings big man Jalen Carrethers went to the line after a late whistle with a chance to put the Cavaliers on top with 13.7 seconds remaining. But he made one of two free throws and was surprisingly removed from the game for the final possession with the game tied.

"They took (Carrethers) out," Red Raiders coach James Abell said. "We saw that after he made the free throw. I just told my guys to get it and take the first good available shot. They gambled a little bit. Mark got it and made one little move. I love Mark going to the basket. I'll live with that any day of the week."

A matchup between two schools with 25-2 records, this game lived up to the hype. Both teams played at a high level, showing quickness, tough defense and outstanding athletic plays on both ends.

Carrethers had eight blocks before going to the bench early in the third quarter with his fourth foul. But Andrews (26-2) was unable to take advantage, as the game was tight throughout. Carrethers finished with 11 points.

Yet the Red Raiders advanced thanks to a strong team effort. Torian Showers with 15 points and Alex Smith with 13 battled for points down low, with Smith having a couple of nice coast-to-coast buckets.

Darius Rogers and Ervin Williams joined Johnson in handling the pressure from Cummings' backcourt.

Johnson finished with 13 points.

Quinton Morrow led Cummings (25-3) with a game-high 23-points.
