HIGH POINT (MCT) — A Guilford County Schools bus driver was cited in connection with a traffic accident last week.

Gay Renee Clark, 51, of Greensboro, did not have her commercial driver's license in her possession when the bus she was driving with 19 students on board was struck by a car at the intersection of East Lexington Avenue and McGuinn Drive last Wednesday, according to High Point police.

The bus was going west on East Lexington Avenue just before 5 p.m. when it gave a right turn signal and attempted a wide right turn on to McGuinn Drive, according to a police report on the accident.

Wide turns are required because of the narrow lanes, but Clark attempted the right turn from the left turn lane at the intersection and did not see a car passing the bus in the right lane, according to the accident report.

The car, a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix, was driven by Lakeshia Nachele Welch of High Point. She told traffic investigators that she did not see the bus' right-turn signal until she got to the bus, the report stated. The car collided with the side of the bus and got wedged under it. Welch was not injured.

The students were being taken home from the Montlieu Elementary School Extended Learning Program. Two students had possible minor injuries, and one student was taken to a hospital, according to the report. The students' status could not be determined Monday.

Clark was cited for the license-possession violation and for making an improper right turn, according to the report.

The district spokesperson said Clark's employment status is unchanged pending an accident-review process.
