Savvy Shopper: Store taps demand for vintage jewelry

(Updated Wednesday, May 11 - 10:29 am)

Thrill of the Hunt has always been known for its antiques.

In the past three years, it has won the "best antiques store" category or was at least a runner-up in Go Triad's Reader's Choice Awards.

But the Greensboro store on Battleground Avenue is also well-known for something else as Valentine's Day approaches: vintage jewelry.

"We've actually been known for vintage jewelry for a number of years," store owner Carol Poling said. "That's what people are buying. It's what we're good at."

That's why, after eight years in business, Poling recently decided to give the store a complete makeover.

The store now focuses exclusively on vintage jewelry, which includes holding classes and workshops and doing repair work.

It also underwent a name change. The store is now called Preen Vintage Jewelry (3122-B Battleground Ave.; 286-6169).

"Over the last three to four years we've been really narrowing the categories," Poling said. "We were down to just painted furniture and vintage jewelry. The numbers support vintage jewelry."

Poling said vintage jewelry is even more popular these days after celebrities started wearing it on the red carpet.

"Now, it's gotten to mainstream America," she said.

As part of its grand reopening, Preen Vintage Jewelry is having a 10 percent off sale through Valentine's Day.

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Grocery deals

Each week I comb through deals on groceries in the Triad from about a dozen stores, including supermarkets, mom-and-pop grocers, farmer's markets and a cooperative.

I then pick and choose which ones I think rise above the rest.

But that's not all. The News & Record's Bargain Sense show also sizes up the latest grocery deals.

Check out my list of the best grocery deals out there and watch Bargain Sense at www.news-record.com/bargainsense.

Bargain Sense is a five-minute weekly show, or video webcast, that I co-host with Faun Finley.

In a nutshell, it's about living the good life in the Triad on a budget.

We've done 45 shows since it launched in April with plenty more on the way.

We're always looking for tips and advice on making the show better, so please drop us a line at bargainsense@news-record.com.

Contest for moms

Moms in the Triad who have a favorite place to shop may cast their votes in a Web-based contest.

The contest, hosted by Triad Moms on Main, is about businesses and services that cater to local moms.

Enter at www.Triad MomsOnMain.com. Look for the "Mom's Choice Awards" link.

Contest deadline is Feb. 18.

Free Tanger app

Tanger Outlets' new mobile app is now available for Android users, not just iPhone owners.

To find it, search for "Tanger" in the Android marketplace.

The Greensboro-based company recently announced the free app, which gives users customized content based on where they're shopping at all of Tanger's 33 centers in 22 states.

Freedom House sale

Men's, women's and children's winter clothes will only be a buck starting Monday at Freedom House Thrift (4639-E W. Market St., Greensboro; 855-0029).

The store, which also sells books, jewelry and household items, will soon begin selling early spring clothing.
