Fitness Center makes her a good loser

When Ann Stroud starting going to the Fitness Center at High Point Regional Hospital, her goal was to get in better physical shape.

“I had primarily sat and eaten for two years, and I knew I had to do something,” she said.

Stroud was limited in what exercises she could do because of arthritis in her knees. Rodney Simpson, Fitness Center director, worked with her to plan an exercise program.

Stroud began walking the track at the Fitness Center. “At first, I could only walk about half a mile with a few stops,” she said. But Stroud kept walking, and now, after two years, she is walking four miles a day three times a week and has lost 60 pounds.

Simpson said this is quite an accomplishment. Stroud walked approximately 624 miles a year.

Stroud’s goal of getting in better shape has come true. “I just feel better, and the walking has definitely helped the arthritis in my knees,” she said. “It is easier for me to move.”

The Fitness Center’s atmosphere and proximity to a hospital has been a benefit, too. “I’ve enjoyed meeting new people, and everyone here is so nice,” Stroud said. “I like the way Rodney is an encourager. I can’t say enough about the staff. It is a wonderful environment.

“Coming here has never been hard. I enjoy it, and it makes me feel better. I like the fact that the Fitness Center is at the hospital. If someone needs help, they can get it quickly.”

Stroud’s credits her husband, Wayne, for being supportive. “Without his support I couldn’t do it,” she said. “My ultimate goal is to just keep on walking.”

When Simpson told Stroud she had been selected as the center’s most-improved member this year, she said she didn’t need the award and to give it to someone else. But the plaque is hanging in the entryway to the fitness center. A new name is added every year.

“(Stroud) has succeeded because of her commitment to the three 'Ds,’ ” Simpson said in a speech recognizing Stroud. “She has determination, discipline and dedication to see it through.”

Though modest in accepting the award, Stroud is proud of her accomplishment.

“This summer for the first time in 10 years, I walked in the sand at the beach holding my husband’s hand,” she said.

“For those who are having trouble getting their exercise program started, just follow Ann’s lead,” Simpson said.

The Fitness Center is at High Point Regional Hospital and is open seven days a week. For more information about the center’s programs, contact Simpson at 878-6221.
