— A truck driver involved in a crash that killed two brothers from Winston-Salem received a suspended jail sentence on Monday, court records show.

Jayne Perkins, 40, received a 75-day suspended jail sentence after pleading guilty in Guilford County District Court to misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and careless and reckless driving. She also had her license suspended for 18 months, was ordered to speak at drivers' education classes, must attend a driving course and complete 100 hours of community service, court records show.

She was placed on unsupervised probation for 18 months and must apologize to the family within the next 30 days.

Perkins, who is from Arkansas, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle following a May 9 wreck on Interstate 40 that killed Darryl Baucum, 15, and his brother, Ishiah Reynolds, 11.

Perkins was headed east on I-40 when she failed to slow down and crashed into another vehicle, which had stopped because of traffic congestion about a mile behind a construction site. She told police she was on her cell phone at the time.

“I looked up, and all I saw were brake lights,” she told officers, according to a Greensboro police report.

Both boys were back-seat passengers in the Toyota struck by Perkins’ truck between Koury Boulevard and U.S. 220 in Greensboro.
