CHARLOTTE (MCT) — Waxhaw police met with Union County prosecutors Thursday to discuss possible charges against the owner of two pit bulls that killed a 5-year-old girl Wednesday.
Makayla Woodard, a Waxhaw Elementary School kindergartner, was home on a snow day when she was killed after police say her neighbor's dogs attacked her and her grandmother. The attack happened between the two homes on Rehobeth Road, police say.
Waxhaw Police Chief Michael Eiss said Thursday he expects to charge the dogs' owner within a few days but didn't detail the charges.
An officer who arrived during the attack Wednesday pulled the dogs off Makayla and shot one of the dogs as it continued to circle the injured girl, police said. The second dog was shot and killed later by police.
Makayla died from her injuries on the way to the hospital. Her grandmother, 67-year-old Nancy Presson, was hospitalized for injures she suffered while trying to save the girl. Presson's condition was not available Thursday.
A neighbor who declined to give her name said she had seen the dogs loose in the neighborhood before. She once saw the pit bulls stop in front of her yard and growl, she said.
Waxhaw's leash law requires that dogs be kept on their owner's property unless they are on a leash. Dogs can roam their owner's property as long as an adult is outside with them and in control of the dogs, according to town ordinances.
