The latest session of the “Adventures in Learning” series at the Shepherd’s Center of Greensboro just concluded recently and I must sing its praises.
This is only the second year I have participated but the classes I attended this term were superb. Glenn Grayson gave an excellent synopsis of historical leaders from the 16th through the 19th centuries with his great sense of humor and fantastic memory.
Then I attended a class on butterflies presented by Dennis Burnette. I learned so much.
After lunch, there was a forum presentation each week that varied in its topic, but the one that stood out was the News & Record’s own Susan Ladd — she brought tears to everyone’s eyes as she spoke about interracial relations.
But my favorite of all was the six-week One City, One Book presentation on Steve Lopez’s book, “The Soloist.” Greensboro Public Library Assistant Director Steve Sumerford and Dr. Whitney Vanderwerff explored this novel in depth with its various themes by bringing in some very knowledgeable speakers who helped us to understand how Greensboro is impacted by these topics and the redemptive power of music.
One City, One Book is a very powerful program that is presented every other year by our fantastic Public Library. I will definitely participate in the future.
Hats off to all the volunteers at the Shepherd’s Center who make this program possible.
