GREENSBORO — Investigators are asking for tips in solving the murder of an 18-year-old Virginia woman who was gunned down outside a local nightclub early Sunday.
Greensboro police say leads are scarce in solving the killing of Lacqueon “Bria” Gregory of Danville, Va.
“We have nothing right now,” said Capt. John Wolfe, who oversees the criminal investigations division. “We are waiting for some information from the public and hoping we get something.”
Gregory was killed about 2:30 a.m. Sunday outside Club Plush at 3404 High Point Road.
The woman, along with friends and family members, were leaving the club and walking to their car when someone fired several rounds from a car using a semi-automatic handgun.
Gregory was struck twice, in the chest and leg, and died later at Moses Cone Hospital.
Wolfe said it appears she was an innocent bystander and not the intended target. Police are unsure what prompted the shooting.
They believe there was some type of argument or fight either in or outside of the club before the shooting.
Wolfe said none of the witnesses so far have confirmed that.
The club also didn’t have surveillance equipment, leaving detectives to work with a vague description of the vehicles possibly involved.
Witnesses described them as an older white, four-door Pontiac Bonneville and a white, newer-model Chevrolet Impala with tinted windows.
No tag numbers have been made available.
Wolfe said detectives are obtaining cell phone pictures from club patrons in the hope it will jar a witness’s memory.
In Danville, Gregory’s father said his family is struggling to come to terms with his daughter’s killing.
“My 11-year-old daughter is taking it the hardest so far,” Ronald Gregory said.
“They were close, and they talked daily," he said. "She is really struggling.”
He said his daughter was considering applying for college and was thinking about a career in the U.S. Air Force.
“She was soft-spoken and a beautiful person inside and out,” he said.
“The hardest part for me is knowing that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. She had no known enemies.”
He said his daughter rarely came to Greensboro but was out for a night on the town with her uncle Matthew Gregory and his girlfriend, along with several of his daughter’s friends.
Ronald Gregory said his brother recalled hearing gunshots as the group walked to the car and yelled for everyone to get down.
“He saw her get hit,” Ronald Gregory said. “He is blaming himself because she was with him when this happened.”
He believes someone knows who killed his daughter.
“All of the people who were there that night — I feel like somebody knows more than they are saying,” he said.
Since January, police have responded to more than 50 calls at the club, which was formerly known as Club Menage.
Most of the calls related to disorderly conduct, alarms, suspicious activity, vehicle break-ins and fights. Three of the calls involved the discharge of firearms.
Anyone with information on the case is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 373-1000. Callers remain anonymous and are eligible for cash rewards.
