GREENSBORO — An Eden woman reported today to start her prison term in the 2009 hit-and-run death of a Summerfield bicyclist, a Guilford County assistant district attorney said.
Grayson Warren Dawson, 49, was transported this morning to the state Department of Correction, said Assistant District Attorney Chris Parrish, who prosecuted the case.
Dawson was sentenced in August to serve at least 14 months for the Oct. 24, 2009 hit-and-run death of David Sherman, 55, of Summerfield. She pleaded guilty to misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, felony hit and run and driving without an operator’s license.
At sentencing she was given a delayed reporting date to take care of a medical procedure related to a bowel disorder. The judge agreed to another delay last month because the procedure had to be reset, and another delay earlier this month because Dawson was hospitalized and recovering from complications.
Dawson’s attorney, Locke Clifford, had asked for the reporting date to be pushed back until Dec. 6 to allow Dawson to go for more doctor’s appointments.
But Superior Court Judge Lindsay Davis Jr. set the date for today, saying, “There comes a time this matter has to proceed on in court.”
Sherman died while biking near N.C. 150 and North Church Street. Dawson, who was reported to have been heavily medicated, struck him head-on in her SUV, made a U-turn and left the scene.
She was arrested a week later.
