GREENSBORO – A woman convicted in the 2009 hit-and-run killing of a Summerfield bicyclist has been ordered to report to prison on Nov. 29.
Grayson Warren Dawson, 49, of Eden, was convicted in August on charges of felony hit-and-run, misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and driving without an operator’s license in the Oct. 24, 2009 death of 55-year-old David Sherman.
Dawson was originally supposed to report to prison on Oct. 11, but that was delayed because of surgeries related to a bowel syndrome.
A judge granted a motion to delay her sentence until Nov. 15, but she failed to report then because she was in the hospital after her surgeries.
Her attorney moved this week to have her reporting date moved to Dec. 6, after more doctor’s appointments.
Superior Court Judge Lindsay Davis Jr. denied the motion and ordered Dawson to turn herself in to the sheriff’s office at 9 a.m. Nov. 29.
“There comes a time this matter has to proceed on in court,” Davis said of his ruling.
Chris Parrish, the prosecutor on the case, questioned Dawson’s motives for seeking another delay, saying she was fit to be taken into custody today.
“I don’t know when this started being about her instead of Mr. Sherman,” Parrish said in court.
Sherman died while biking near N.C. 150 and North Church Street. Dawson, who was reported to have been heavily medicated, struck him head-on in her SUV and left the scene.
She was arrested a week later.
