GREENSBORO — Page’s touchdowns Friday against Southeast Guilford started looking like an instant replay.
James Summers to Orlando Hatfield. Summers to Hatfield. On it went until the Pirates beat the Falcons 42-22.
Summers threw four touchdown passes to Hatfield, beginning at the end of the first quarter and extending into the third quarter to help break open a close game.
The win gives the Pirates (9-2, 5-1) a second place finish in the Metro 4-A Conference and could give them a home game for the first round of the playoffs.
“We knew they were physical up front,” Page coach Kevin Gillespie said. “They were lined up to stop the run. We wanted to spread them out and make them defend the pass.”
The first touchdown from Summers to Hatfield came in the first quarter and the second just before halftime, after Southeast Guilford had cut the lead to seven points. Summers found Hatfield on a post route in the back of the end zone with 29 seconds to play in the second quarter, giving the Pirates a 28-14 halftime lead.
“They didn’t want us to run our sweep, so we faked the ball to (the running back) and sent two guys down the middle, making the safety chose,” Summers said.
Early in the third, the pair hooked up again. This time on a receiver screen that Hatfield turned into a 44-yard score, building the lead to 34-14.
“I give all the credit to my blockers on that one,” Hatfield said. “For that play to work, you have to have linemen downfield blocking.”
While the offense was airing it out, the defense kept the Falcons’ rushing attack in check.
The third quarter and Falcons didn’t even threaten again until a blocked punt gave them a short field and they got a touchdown with less than 3 minutes to play.
“I challenged them all week,” Gillespie said of his defense. “It can’t be just one or two guys making plays against them, it has to be a total defensive effort. They’ve played great the last three games. They’re real young and I think they just needed experience to figure out who they are.”
