Readers' Choice 2010: Buff offers a relaxing atmosphere

— Buff Natural Nail Bar and Salon customers clearly like the way it pampers hands and feet.

The nail salon has won annual Readers’ Choice awards since Susan Millikan and Melissa Tankersley opened it four years ago.

Here, customers escape the daily grind for a bit of beauty.

Staff greet customers with offers of a warm neck wrap and cup of tea or coffee.

Patrons might notice what’s missing. There’s no chemical smell.

“We don’t do any artificial treatments on nails,” Tankersley says. “We look for products that are the healthiest choices.”

Choices such as Zoya polish, which is free of formaldehyde as well as many other chemicals.

Customers at the nail bar and in the pedicure section offer more reasons for visiting.

“It’s quiet and relaxing,” Cathleen Williams says.

She and friend Joanna Bryson wear white terry cloth mitts over their hands. Underneath, a paraffin wax dip — the final step in a moisture manicure — will leave their hands silky smooth.

Jean Cornwell compliments the friendly, consistent service.

So does Sharon Norman, who also commends its cleanliness.

Buff’s efforts extend beyond beauty. Norman praises owners for hosting blood drives and collecting canned goods for food drives and pet food for animal shelters.

“They are always doing something for this community,” Norman says.

For manicures, Buff charges from $22 to $30, depending on the type. Pedicures range from $35 to $50. A combination of both ranges from $52 to $75. Prices are lower for children and teens. Packages are available.

The salon recently added hair services by stylist Molly Mebane.

As Tankersley peels the paraffin wax from Bryson’s hands, Bryson admires the end result. “Can you believe these hands have to go to work now?”
