Of all the things Tyler Alberts could have imagined happening to him right now, being offered a scholarship to play football at North Carolina would have been among the least expected.

But that's what happened during the weekend, and Alberts, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound tight end and defensive end at Forsyth Country Day, committed to become the 18th member of UNC's 2011 recruiting class.

Alberts, who did not play high school football during his sophomore and junior years at Forsyth Country Day, said he once thought baseball would be his college sport.

"I wish I had started playing football a lot earlier," Alberts told the Winston-Salem Journal.

BOSTON COLLEGE: Freshman quarterback Chase Rettig returned to the practice field for the Eagles after spraining an ankle in Saturday's game against Notre Dame.

Rettig made his collegiate debut against the Fighting Irish, but he lasted just over a quarter before spraining the ankle. Mike Marscovetra replaced him.

Also, The Boston Globe and Boston Herald reported that BC linebacker Mark Herzlich has a broken hand. The injury is not expected to keep him out of Saturday's game at N.C. State (noon, WXLV-45).

BCS RANKINGS: The Bowl Championship Series standings will be released starting Oct. 17 on Sunday nights during ESPN's new "BCS Countdown" show, which airs at 8:15. ESPN is in its first season as the TV home for the BCS, with rights to the Orange, Sugar and Fiesta bowls, as well as the BCS championship game.

BASKETBALL

APPALACHIAN STATE PLAYER ARRESTED: Anthony Breeze, an Appalachian State basketball player who sat out last season after transferring from Coastal Carolina, was arrested Sept. 30 on two felony drug charges in Boone. According to a news release from the Boone Police Department, Breeze, 22, was taken before the Watauga County Magistrate, where he was given a $6,000 secured bond and Dec. 13 court date.

A school spokesman told the Winston-Salem Journal that athletics director Charlie Cobb and basketball coach Jason Capel were aware of the arrest and in the process of gathering facts before making any decisions or statement.

WAKE'S TERRELL HURT: J.T. Terrell, a freshman from Burlington, suffered a broken right thumb last week and the injury could jeopardize his availability for the start of Wake Forest's season.

The thumb on Terrell's shooting hand was fractured when teammate Melvin Tabb inadvertently stepped on it during a workout. The former Cummings guard could be out for up to a month, though coach Jeff Bzdelik said it's likely he could be recovered in time for the Nov. 12 regular-season opener against Stetson.
