ELON — A first-year Elon University student died today after she had collapsed, the college said in a statement.
Michelle A. Pfleger was walking to her 9:25 a.m. class when she collapsed in front of the campus' McMichael Science Center, according to a message from Elon President Leo Lambert that was published on the university's website.
She was taken to Alamance Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Doctors had not yet said what caused her death, according to Lambert's statement.
According to the statement, Pfleger was from Hackettstown, N.J.
She was an Odyssey scholar and recipient of the Mac Mahon family scholarship.
She lived on campus at Danieley Center “G.”
Pfleger was the daughter of Joan Cummins and Jack Rudewick of Hackettstown.
"The tragic death of a student is devastating to our community and we want to reach out to friends and acquaintances who knew Michelle," Lambert said in the statement.
Counseling services will be available for students.
A gathering to mourn her passing and celebrate her life will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday in the Moseley Center, room 215, according to the statement.
