High Point City Council approved a rezoning request for the Islamic Center of High Point to create a mosque at 2801 Allen Jay Road, across the street from the old Allen Jay school.
Some neighbors complained about increased traffic and noise while one woman said the council should stand up for American rights and deny the request. “We live in the Bible Belt,” she said. She said the nation was founded under God by George Washington.
City transportation staff said the transportation impact would be minimal, though it could become a problem during short periods of time if and when Guilford County Schools decides to reopen Allen Jay.
Uzma Zaman of the Islamic Center said the city’s Muslim community continues to grow and has outgrown the two mosques at West Lexington Avenue and West Market Street. A new mosque is needed for the community’s growing needs.
The council unanimously approved the request.
